Skimboarding vs Surfing

No Comments 11 April 2009

I don’t understand all the disrespect skimboarders seem to get from surfers, as seen from this recent DailyStoke article. You can get the same enjoyment out of either sport and many people both surf and skimboard. Skimboarding has a fairly steep learning curve to become comfortable at riding waves but once your there you just get so stoked on riding more.

Surfing is definitely easier for beginners to pickup as long as you have good waves. Getting barreled and going down the line is also way easier in surfing. Skimboarding rides are usually really short and aggressive since you can really whip the board around the wave while with surfing you get the much longer ride and less maneuverability from having a fin.

Bill Bryan, the guy in the videos you posted does in fact surf and does about every other board sport you can name. He’s an expert in flowrider and has pretty much dominated the skimboarding world for some time. The guy was and even was ballsy enough to get towed in to Teahupo on a skimboard.

Either way quit the hate, there’s no sense disrespecting someone for holding a skimboard, especially since they probably have a surfboard in their car ready to out ride you. Both board sports are cool so master them both.

Bill Bryan: Best Skimboarder of All Time?

1 Comment 19 December 2008

When I think of the sport of skimboarding, Bill Bryan definitely comes to mind. The guy has been skimboarding longer than I’ve been alive and has been considered the best of the past decade. Having claimed the winning spot of the 2008 United Skim Tour, hes certainly not stopping anytime soon.

Bill Bryan is the swiss army knife of board sports and has seemed to conquer them all. Besides skimboarding, Bill is an excellent surfer and snowboarder and more recently hes been beating up the competition in the sport of flowrider.

Don’t believe the hype? Just hop on over to YouTube and type in Bill Bryan and see for yourself how hard this guy rips. I’ll even start you off with one of my recent favorites of him skimboarding Teahupo. Also make sure to check out all his 10th Street Bros skim movies, there all great.

Victoria Skimboards Great Choice for Entry Wave Riding

No Comments 05 December 2008

So Victoria Skimboards has been in the game longer then any other board maker, since 1976 in fact. Over the years they’ve been the first to try stuff out and because of that, they make some damn good skimboards. Whether your just getting started sand sliding or catching a frontside wrap on an overhead wave, you can’t go wrong with choosing a Victoria. Some of the best rippers out there ride for Victoria such as Bill Bryan and Morgan Just so you really can’t go wrong.

Just getting into wave riding? Or are you just looking for a solid first board? For that I’d look into the Victoria Ultra Vac skimboard.

Want to advance your wave riding skills without breaking the bank on a high end carbon board? The Victoria Poly Vac is a perfect choice in this situation.

Now if you really love skimboarding and are out there constantly trying new things and want a great tech board thats responsive and stiff. Your going to want to look into the Victoria Carbon Epoxy which can be had for about $410, making it one of the cheapest carbon boards around. You really can’t go wrong in choosing a Victoria skimboard.
