Rumor Mill: Andy Irons Taking 2009 Off?

No Comments 14 December 2008

So the guys over at Stab Magazine have come out with quite a few juicy rumors to keep us busy.

- Andy Irons will take next year off to chill and do some surf trips. He will aim for a wildcard in 2010. Billabong is backing him all the way, and has just given him a new five-year deal. (Parko’s just signed up for another five, too.)

- Wonder why Bobby Martinez has been shredding Pipe with no stickers on the nose of his board? He’s no longer riding for Reef. Despite the tough economic times (and his management persuading him to put ink on paper), Bobby walked away from an offer that was three-quarters of what he’d asked for. When he simmered down, Bobby went back to Reef, saying okay, I’ll take the deal, but Reef had withdrawn. It’s gonna be tough trying to find a company with $500k kicking round in its marketing budget right now. But Bob has signed some of the smarter deals in surfing. Remember seeing huge Monster energy drink green and black “M” on the bottom and deck of his board? Rumours suggest this nets him around $US300k.

- As always, Dane’s endorsements are the subject of constant speculation. The latest has it that the golden child is going to break his deal with Quik to join Analog. With Burton’s backing, Analog’s certainly got the cash. But Dane has not suggested he’s even thinking about moving, so the rumour remains unfounded.

Should certainly be an interesting year with the economy being the way it is right now. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing lots more issues with sponsorships like we see between Bobby Martinez and Reef. As for Andy Irons taking the year off, I think its great and personally can’t wait to see what comes of it. With Billabong backing him fully we’ll see some sick footage of freesurfing for sure next year. The time off will hopefully do him some good like its done for past champions such as Slater and Curren.

Slater Wins 2008 Billabong Pipeline Masters

No Comments 13 December 2008

It was a battle between two great athletes in the rain soaked final event. Kelly went on to beat Chris Ward for his 6th win at the Billabong Pipeline Masters. This is Kelly’s sixth win of the 11 event 2008 ASP World Tour season. Kelly took the win in style surfing the 8 foot pipe with his trusty 5′11″ Al Merrick further proving hes a freak of nature.

“It’s inexplicable,” Slater said of his win and banner season. “I’m just stoked. I wasn’t even worried about surfing the event, so to surf it and win and get that board (a Gerry Lopez designed surfboard trophy). I’ll cherish that for sure.”

2008 Billabong Pro Maui Update

No Comments 09 December 2008

So it looks like theres no swell for the ladies of the Billabong Pro Maui 2008 yet but it’s only a matter of time before Honolulu Bay gets fired up. Stephanie Gilmore has claimed the first spot position but the second is still up for grabs. This is the last event in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing and the last event in the 2008 Women’s World Tour.

“We’re obviously off today as the Bay is virtually flat,” Dino Andino, Billabong Pro Maui Contest Director, said. “That being said, it’s only Day 1 of the waiting period and we’re anticipating a fetch of swell to come through mid-week. We’ll just be monitoring the winds to see what happens.”

Event organizers will convene tomorrow at 7am tomorrow morning for a possible 8am start.

The waiting period for the Billabong Pro Maui will run from December 8 – 20, 2008.

The Billabong Pro Maui will be webcast LIVE via www.billabongpro.com

Epic Swell at Maverick’s Boosts Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards

No Comments 05 December 2008

The Thanksgiving weekend at Maverick’s produced an epic feast for many of the world’s top big wave riders during two of the most perfect days ever seen at the legendary Northern California surf break. The all-time action at Mavs provided a monumental kick-start to the Northern Hemisphere winter season and adds to the record number of entries in the ninth annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Monster Energy.

The product of an intense mid-pacific storm on Thanksgiving Day, the extremely long-period swell hit the Maverick’s reef at an ideal angle, magnifying the face heights of the bigger sets to the 30- to 45-foot range. While delighting a group of elite local and international big wave surfers, rogue sets broke unexpectedly along reefs and breakwaters throughout the region, capsizing a 26-foot power boat less than a mile from Maverick’s, which sits just outside Princeton Harbor in Half Moon Bay, a half-hour south of San Francisco. Two fishermen died in the accident.

The surf sessions were not without their own degree of peril. California big wave star Greg Long caught one of the biggest waves to roll in on Saturday, November 29, but straightened out as he was overrun by a mass of whitewater. Long was thrust so deep underwater he suffered a broken eardrum, eventually surfacing with a total loss of equilibrium. Thanks to a strong leash and a quick rescue by Maverick’s pioneer Jeff Clark on a personal water craft, Long was brought to safety before being swept through the notorious rocks which threaten surfers carried inside the main break.

A group of globetrotting big wave chasers jetted into Half Moon Bay ahead of the swell based on forecasts by Surfline.com. South African Grant “Twiggy” Baker proved that his victory at the Maverick’s Surf Contest two years ago was no fluke, consistently taking off the deepest and making it again and again. Mark Healey and Dave Wassel flew in from Hawaii and made the most of the two days of intense surfing. Rusty Long and Nathan Fletcher stood out as two of the most passionate big wave hunters from Southern California and made a big mark on the massive right-handers.

But the local crew was not to be outdone by the visiting contingent. Grant Washburn, Skindog Collins, Nic Lamb, Shawn Rhodes and Lance Harriman all took off on bombs worthy of Monster Paddle entries. Among the largest bombs of the swell was the vast green wall caught by San Francisco’s Alex Martins along with Nathan Fletcher.

Keala Kennelly Grabs Wild Card Entry for the Billabong Pro Maui

No Comments 04 December 2008

Billabong Pro Maui presented by Hawaiian Airlines will add local Hawaiian and former top ten pro Keala Kennelly as a wildcard entry, adding some excitement and drama to the competition. With Julia De La Rosa out with injuries, the 2007 X-Game’s Gold Medal-winning Kennelly was offered the open spot, while Billabong’s new star from New Zealand, wildcard Paige Hareb qualified for the 2009 WCT and moved straight into the main event.

“I’m stoked to get a shot in the Trails!” said an enthusiastic Keala when she was told the news. “I have been surfing all over the world, getting a lot of coverage from the magazines, but there is nothing like surfing good Honolua Bay with only one other person out.o/oo

Seven-time World Champion Layne Beachley, who will be surfing in her last regular ASP competition, and is gunning to win her final event, has had some fiery duels with Kennelly. Both are seasoned pros with a lot to prove at the fabled locale that caps the ASP World Tour.

“Keala could do some damage at a place like Honolua Bay,” said Billabong team manager Megan Villa. She’s proved to be dangerous there in previous years.o/oo Kennelly came second at the 2006 Maui Pro.

Kennelly, who was named Freesurf Magazine’s Female Surfer of the year in 2007, was a season regular in the quirky but well-received surf-noir series John from Cincinnati.

Beachley, the winning-est woman competitor in ASP history, is as fearless as Keala in big waves, and equally at home at fast right-hand point breaks like Honolua Bay. A matchup between them on Layne’s last waltz would add excitement to an already memorable final event.

Fuel TV will air coverage of the Billabong Pro Maui on January 22, 2009 at 8pm ET/PT. A OELive’ webcast of the event will be streamed on billabongpro.com throughout the active days of the contest.
